Fewer jobless claims, higher GDP brighten U.S. prospects

Two U.S. government reports offered some relief from the bad news about the nation's economy. The Labor Department reported that first-time unemployment claims fell 37,000, to 391,000, last week. The four-week rolling average also fell. And the Commerce Department raised its estimate of gross domestic product for the second quarter.
