Panel proposes surgery, therapy coverage for N.Y. transgenders

In an effort to curb health spending, New York's Medicaid overhaul panel has proposed providing coverage for surgery and hormone replacement therapy for transgenders in the state. The proposal may help reduce Medicaid costs for the mental health and drug abuse treatment of transgendered persons, who -- without the surgery and therapy -- are at greater risk of depression, suicide attempts and substance abuse, advocates said.
