AMA survey finds many physicians in private practice

An American Medical Association survey shows that private medical practice continues to be a strong business model, with 53.2% of surveyed doctors self-employed and 60% working in physician-owned practices. Of respondents who were family physicians, 39.8% owned their own practices. Researchers noted that "trends toward hospital employment observed in certain areas of the country are part of a national trend," although precise figures were not available.
