American Airlines to hire pilots for first time since 2001

American Airlines announced plans to hire 1,500 pilots over the next five years, the first time the carrier has hired pilots since 2001. "While we are pleased — it certainly beats the alternative — we believe the best way to secure a long-term future at American Airlines is to see the merger with US Airways completed," said Allied Pilots Association spokesman Gregg Overman. AMR Corp., the parent company of American Airlines, also reported earnings of $71 million in August.
