Feds on the defensive over smart grid standards

A plan by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to adopt business and communication protocols established by the North American Energy Standards Board into its regulatory platform has drawn widespread scrutiny from the energy industry and its various constituents -- who say voluntary, not mandatory, standards are the best way to ensure smart grid reliability without raising costs. "Standards should not determine specific business models but should enable various business models to adapt to the adoption of new technologies to enable innovation," the Edison Electric Institute said.
