Advertising is essential for digital music services such as Pandora and Spotify, and with the bulk of traditional radio's ad revenue coming from local spots, establishing a local-market presence and tailoring ads is seen as key. With the recent introduction of iTunes Radio, however, "the marketplace is getting cluttered, and there is a lot of noise," said Spotify's Erin Clift.
