IASB chair defends lease proposal

In a speech at the 2013 International Financial Reporting Standards Congress in Berlin last month, International Accounting Standards Board Chairman Hans Hoogervorst made the case in support of a proposal that would require companies to include leases on their balance sheets. Hoogervorst said the standard would benefit preparers, investors and the companies themselves. The proposal is opposed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board's Investor Advisory Committee, which favors company disclosure, but not placing leases on the balance sheet.
