The number of emergency department visits by children due to sports-related brain injuries increased 92% from 2002 to 2011, but the severity of injuries dropped, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. The hospitalization rate remained at 10% during the study period. Increases in ED visits may be partly explained by growing awareness and caution about concussions. "People are recognizing the signs and symptoms. People are more aware of the complications. So people are coming in more," lead author Dr. Holly Hanson said.
