N.Y. district's literacy coaches help blend reading, writing with other subjects

The Kingston City School District in New York is using seven literacy coaches in its elementary and middle schools to help teachers blend literacy standards with social studies and science lessons. Coaches model techniques for the teachers, such as how to actively engage students by setting up group research stations to allow students to collaborate to find online articles, videos and other materials. "All content areas are completely integrated into literacy instruction," coach Tracey Hazlett said.
