Proven strategies to improve students' writing

In this blog post, several teachers offer their suggestions for helping students improve their writing skills. Veteran educator Mary K. Tedrow, co-director of the Northern Virginia Writing Project, recommends giving students more time to talk before launching directly into a writing exercise. Ray Salazar, an educator in the Chicago Public Schools, writes that teaching writing under the Common Core State Standards will require students stop writing the five-paragraph essay, and he suggests several tips for improving narrative, argumentative and expository writing.
