Restaurants boost ad spending to sell limited-time items

Restaurant chains spent $1.73 billion on advertising in the second quarter, up 12.6% from the same period in 2012 even as overall advertising spending rose only 3.5%, according to Kantar Media. Spending is up as chains including Wendy's and Burger King pour funds into ads for limited-time menu offerings designed to boost traffic, sales and market share.
