Study: Vaccine avoidance linked to pertussis outbreak in Calif.

Parents' refusal to vaccinate their children contributed to a pertussis epidemic in California in 2010, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. Researchers found that people in locations where more families used nonmedical vaccine exemptions were more likely to contract the disease. The study also found an increase in nonmedical exemptions in the state from 0.77% in 2000 to 2.33% in 2010.
