The looming government shutdown would affect federal agencies in different ways, based largely on how many of their workers are considered essential employees. That would leave 46,000 employees idle at the Department of Commerce; more than 12,000 workers at the Department of Energy sent home; and 58,000 employees of the Department of the Interior on furlough.
