Construction industry experts cannot predict when the thousands of unemployed construction workers will find new work. They note that many entered the industry when manufacturers started to shrink their workforces. However, the credit crisis ended 11 quarters of consecutive spending growth and cut off construction as a route to a middle-class lifestyle for many workers. "I've been describing Sept. 15, 2008, as the day the music stopped," AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson said.
