Glider pilots fight eviction from California airport

Glider pilots fought to the last minute to appeal their eviction from Hemet-Ryan Airport, in Hemet, Calif., under order of the Riverside County Economic Development Agency, which plans to expand the state's fire-suppression operations at the facility. The pilots were given some hope when officials said this week that they would be open to further discussion on whether the gliders should have more time. The glider enthusiasts have the option of filing a formal complaint against the airport over what it considers the unreasonable deadline to vacate by Oct. 1, and if it prevails, the federal government could withhold funding for airport transportation projects, said Ronald Cozad, the attorney representing the glider enthusiasts.
