People should take care when they select exotic plants for their landscapes to avoid acquiring species that were previously thought to be safe but are now considered invasive, writes Guy Mussey, an expert in environmental horticulture. Invasive alien plant species, which thrive on more than 100 million acres in the U.S., tend to spread rampantly and "outcompete" native species.
