Full effect of United-Continental merger will take time, observers say

It could take several years for the full impact of the merger between United Airlines and Continental Airlines to take effect, observers say. The merger was expected to close this week. Once the deal is official, the carriers will exchange the data that will allow them to integrate their operations. The combined carrier will also need to work out seniority issues with its unionized employees.
