Asteroid collision might have caused troughs across Vesta, study says

Giant troughs stretching across Vesta, the solar system's brightest asteroid, might have resulted from another asteroid hitting its south pole, according to a study led by Debra Buczkowski, a planetary geologist from the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Md. Scientists will continue to assess the information about the asteroid gathered by NASA's Dawn spacecraft to boost their computer simulations of the evolution of the troughs.
