Loyalty program boosts sales, profits at Walgreens

Walgreens' same-store sales rose 4.6% in the fiscal fourth quarter and profits jumped 86% as the retailer began to reap the benefits of using purchase data from its Balance Rewards program to improve merchandise selection. While customer counts slipped 1.9%, the average purchase increased 3.6%.
