Medicare benefits will continue under shutdown, but research will slow

The federal government began closing some of its operations after Congress failed to pass a measure Monday to allow federal agencies to continue spending money. Congress is deeply divided over the Affordable Care Act, whose public exchanges open today. The shutdown will not stop Medicare benefits, and patients enrolled in National Institutes of Health clinical research will continue to be cared for, but new patient enrollments will stop, there will be other research delays and disease surveillance will be limited.
