Too many individuals suffering from chronic pain receive insufficient medication because of exaggerated fears of addiction or lack of training in pain management, writes clinical psychologist J. Donald Schumacher, CEO and president of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Pain treatment for older patients, especially those with dementia, can be a particular challenge, he notes.
