Shutdown will disrupt FDA inspections but not ACA exchanges

The Affordable Care Act's health insurance exchanges will open on time, and Medicare and Medicaid programs will continue operations, despite a partial shutdown of the federal government. FDA inspections of drugmakers and imported drugs will be affected, as will CDC illness outbreak monitoring, medical research grant activity, monitoring of substance abuse programs, and funding for medical countermeasures against biological, chemical, radiological and other threats. HHS has said that about 55% of FDA staff would stay on the job with the rest being furloughed.
