U.S. government in partial shutdown as Congress flubs deadline

The U.S. Congress failed to avoid a partial government shutdown Monday, and the next deadline is Oct. 17, when the government risks default. No further negotiations are scheduled in the partisan impasse. According to one estimate, the shutdown will cost the U.S. economy $300 million a day.
