House Republicans defend flexibility in certification of VLJs

Lawmakers investigating the certification process for the Eclipse 500 very light jet appear deeply divided over FAA "loopholes" that allow companies to meet "alternative means of compliance" or "equivalent levels of safety." Democrats on the House aviation subcommittee said such exceptions "are cause for concern and suggest the immediate need for a broad policy review of the FAA certification process." But Republicans "wholeheartedly" disagreed, arguing that the flexibility allows innovation while still maintaining safety through multiple redundancies.
