SEC extends ban on short sales

To give Congress more time to pass the $700 billion economic-rescue plan, the Securities and Exchange Commission extended the emergency ban on short selling in nearly 1,000 stocks. The ban will continue until three business days after the rescue package is enacted, if it gets approved. But the ban will not last past Oct. 17.
