Federal grant program seeks to improve teacher training

Under a federal grant competition announced Friday, teaching colleges would be eligible for a portion of $185 million for graduating teachers whose students perform well on state tests. Those who participate would be required to link teacher graduation data to students' test scores, improve teacher-licensing exams and eliminate struggling teacher-training programs. In announcing the new program, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said that about two-thirds of teachers say they were not prepared for classroom teaching.
