Apple narrows gap on Samsung in U.S. smartphone race

Apple grew its third-place market share by 2.1 percentage points in August among U.S. smartphone makers while industry leader Samsung Electronics remained flat and second-place LG Electronics declined slightly. Android and Apple each grew their software shares at the expense of their rivals, especially Research In Motion, which declined by 3.1 percentage points to 8.3%. Also, Google revealed that "Gingerbread," --- Android 2.3 -- remains the most prevalent of the Android operating systems followed by version 4.0.
