St. Croix River bridge between Minn., Wis. to have extradosed design

The planned $580 million to $676 million bridge across the St. Croix River between Minnesota and Wisconsin will feature an "extradosed" design that will make it less vulnerable to vibration and high winds than regular cable-stayed bridges. The bridge will have shorter towers and only five support piers instead of the original six, according to John Chiglo, Minnesota Department of Transportation project director. The existing 80-year-old lift bridge will be converted into a walking and cycling trail.
