Chickens help safeguard Fla. residents' health

Seven hens in Palm Beach County, Fla., serve as disease sentinels for local residents. The animals are tested once a week for the Florida Department of Health in an effort to catch zoonotic diseases such as West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis before they spread to humans via mosquito vectors.
