EU and US trade officials aim to overcome regulatory hurdles

US Trade Representative Michael Froman says he is optimistic that obstacles created by regulatory changes in the US and the EU can be overcome. Froman has met with EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht, who says he wants "horizontal rules" to guide cooperation. "And what I mean by that is we should ultimately strive for the mutual recognition of our regulations across a broad range of sectors," De Gucht said. "In my mind, this is the most efficient way to connect our two systems to allow our businesses to operate more effectively across the Atlantic."
