Government shutdown limits FDA's oversight of food, drugs

The FDA is furloughing about 45% of its workforce, or 6,620 of its 14,779 workers, due to the government shutdown. The agency will have to stop most of its laboratory research, tracking of imports and routine inspections. "Select vital activities" will be continued, including work involving high-risk recalls of drugs and food.
