Group urges patients to speak up for physician hand hygiene

Despite increasing awareness of infections in hospitals and other health care centers, two studies show that most patients still aren't comfortable asking professionals to wash their hands. The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology has launched a campaign to encourage patients to speak up and has distributed posters to 15,000 hospitals with tips on how patients can be more vocal about cleanliness. "We are trying to empower patients and families to speak up and understand their role," said Carol McLay, chair of the committee that created the campaign.
