House bills would protect vets' benefits, other funding during shutdown

The House today is considering three bills that would protect funding for veterans' benefits, parks and monuments, and the municipal government of Washington, D.C., during the government shutdown. The White House said the bills represented a "piecemeal" approach to governing and that the president would veto them if they passed Congress.
