Merck to sack 8,500 employees, refocus on sales-driven R&D

Merck is laying off 8,500 workers on top of 7,500 layoffs previously announced, or a collective 20% of the company's workforce. The move is part of a strategic shift that could save $3.5 billion through the end of 2015 while refocusing on commercially minded drug development, the company said.
