New IRS rules could mean the end of automatic gratuities

Tax rules set to take effect at the beginning of next year may prompt restaurant owners to scrap automatic gratuities for large parties. The rules will add paperwork for businesses that include automatic gratuities and will prevent restaurants from using these charges to lower their minimum-wage obligations.
