Pets in Pa. hospital highlight nurse-led caregiving

When registered nurse Heather Matthew, clinical practice leader of the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania's emergency department, started a regular "Pet the Pooch" program as a stress reliever for nurses and staff, she knew that the hospital administration valued her initiative and leadership. "From the time you come to Penn to work here, they really emphasize that nursing is valued," she said. "They involve nursing in almost every decision they make." "Pet the Pooch" started in an ED conference room and now serves the entire hospital.
