Rival programs aim to promote sustainable forestry

Rival forestry certification programs are competing for the support of environmentalists and industry players while sparking a debate over how best to manage forestry resources. The Forest Stewardship Council, seen as the greener label of the two, promotes sustainable management of existing forests; the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, by contrast, allows large clear-cuts. "In a world of depleting forest stocks, any effort toward responsible forestry is a step in the right direction," writes Mike Hower.
