With workers furloughed, federal IT and intel grind to near halt

Since Tuesday, the majority of federal science and technology workers -- and 7 in 10 civilian intelligence employees -- are no longer reporting to the agencies they work for due to the government shutdown, sources say. While officials say the furloughs will not harm national security and some agencies including the Federal Communications Commission are still up and running, many government websites are offline and operations in IT-heavy departments such as NASA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology have been significantly cut.
