Florida residents get input on new flood maps

Two homeowners who have closely examined the history of local flooding in light of new flood maps for Hernando County, Fla., say a 100-year storm event will never flood as far away from a drainage ditch as the maps indicate. The maps, which have not been updated since 1984, will be used by mortgage companies to decide whether a homeowner must buy flood insurance once FEMA certifies the maps. The public review of the maps could prompt some revisions.
