Interventions strain Fed's balance sheet

The Federal Reserve, which has loaned out hundreds of billions of dollars to help rescue financial institutions and keep money markets functioning, still faces the challenge of keeping the U.S. out of recession. No matter what Congress and the White House do with the economic-rescue plan, the immediate economic threat -- a collapse of investor confidence in the broader financial system -- has not yet been addressed, and the Fed is down to a few options.
