Scientists track birth of the universe with sophisticated simulator

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, say they've completed a first-of-its-kind simulation of the creation of the universe that comes closer than any before it in mimicking the real thing. The so-called Bolshoi simulation was run using a supercomputer from NASA and relies on data from the agency's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. Unlike earlier simulations, Bolshoi tracks the evolution of dark matter halos, a precursor to the generation of galaxies.
