Gastric bypass leads to diabetes remission in study

Seventy-nine percent of patients with short-duration type 2 diabetes who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery attained disease remission, while 39% of those who had the disease for more than eight years were able to reverse diabetes, a study revealed. Researchers also found 73% of patients with short-term diabetes and 21% of those with long-term diabetes were able to discontinue their medications. The results were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting.
