CDC's skeleton crew treading water amid shutdown

The CDC placed 8,754 people on furlough due to the government shutdown, according to CDC Director Tom Frieden, and public health programs including those that deal with influenza surveillance and foodborne pathogen outbreak investigations are being compromised. "Microbes/other threats didn't shut down," Frieden tweeted. "We are less safe.”
