Cisco gets physical as it confronts the rise of SDN

Cisco is betting on the supremacy of "hardware-defined networking" with the impending launch of its Application Centric Infrastructure -- a programmable platform that embeds software, processing technology and custom ASICs into physical infrastructure. The platform, which is being developed by spin-in Insieme Networks, is designed to address what Cisco's Frank D'Agostino says are shortcomings of software-only solutions, including a lack of scalability.
