Maine school becomes latest to consider eliminating physics

The University of Southern Maine has become the latest school to consider eliminating its physics major. Schools in at least nine other states also have cut or combined physics departments, affecting the number of jobs available for faculty. Supporters of the discipline say the trend could exacerbate the lack of qualified candidates for science-related jobs. University administrators, however, cite concerns about a lack of diversity -- and interest -- in the discipline.
