The average entree at major U.S. restaurants contained 670 calories in 2010 and 2011, according to a study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that also saw a slight drop in sodium levels. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, analyzed more than 26,000 menu entrees at 213 restaurant chains. They found no health improvements to children's meals, but said fast-food entrees were about 40 calories lighter, on average. "Restaurants make changes to their menus regularly, but they may make both healthy and unhealthy changes simultaneously," researcher Helen Wu says.
