Illinois governor fills state education staff jobs with loyalists

Since taking control of the Illinois State Board of Education earlier this year, Gov. Rod Blagojevich has orchestrated the hiring of at least nine of the agency's staff members, even though staffing decisions are supposed to be made by the Board. While the governor's office say the handpicked staff will ensure the agency runs properly, critics say the governor's appointments are undermining its independence.
