An earthquake in Indonesia last week focused attention on how to build quake-proof buildings. Experts recommend building on dense soil with lightweight materials to prevent structural collapse. "For example, buildings that use corrugated aluminum roofs are far safer during earthquakes than buildings that use clay tiles," said Yuskar Lase, an expert on quake-proof buildings.
