Dreadlocks get a small business into a tangle with the EEOC

A Virginia-based moving-and-storage company requires that employees' "hair, facial hair, beards and general grooming must be neat, clean and trimmed" because workers go into customers' homes and have "close personal contact with them." So what to do about a Rastafarian whose dreadlocks came halfway down his back? The company refused to hire him, claiming a religious exemption from "this important policy would have caused an undue hardship on the company." But the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission disagreed and filed a lawsuit against the mover. "No person should ever be forced to choose between his religion and a job," said a government lawyer.
