Southwest-AirTran deal just one of several big mergers under way

In the days since Southwest Airlines announced its proposed acquisition of AirTran Airways for $1.4 billion, another major merger deal transpired. Mid-sized aircraft part supplier TransDigm Group Inc. announced a similar-sized plan to buy McKechnie Aerospace Holdings, and the announcements come not long after Safran SA announced on Sept. 20 a plan to buy biometrics company L-1 Identity Solutions for $1.1 billion.
